COMMUNITY DISCUSSION PART 2

Americans are witnessing a rapid transformation of government entities that now impact (and will impact further) our community. The articles we will discuss at this session include an article by Bonnie Honig that discusses the value of “public things” – namely the value beyond the monetary. The article by Steven Robinson describes a community pulling together to protect itself from a project that threatened their “public things”. The article by Scheiring, formerly a member of the Hungarian Parliament, outlines the steps Orban has taken to destroy the democratic state but suggests what he says it takes to undo that destruction of institutions held in public trust. What do we, as a community, consider public goods? Can we, through considering what author Bonnie Honig calls “public things”, define what it is we want to fight to preserve? Do we have the will and tenacity to construct a resistance like that described by Robinson? .

Wednesday, April 23 @ 7pm in the Board Room at the Washtington Street Education Center (WSEC). Join us in person or on zoom.
The ARTICLES and ZOOM link are posted on the web page HERE.

IMMIGRATION 101 – March 31 Panel Discussion

A very full McKune room at the Chelsea District Library heard local activist groups discuss the status of an ongoing, aggressive campaign to deport undocumented residents in Washtenaw County. (Note – Ramiro Martinez, a US Citizen and the partner of one the panelists, was physically restrained and harassed by ICE the day following the presentation.) Speakers included: Laura Sanders, Mary Ann Perone (and Ramiro Martinez) from MIRA* & WICIR*, Marjorie Ziefert and Chuck Kieffer from MIRA, and Rebecca Olszenski from MIRC*. Please contact OWOF if you’d like to get more information about follow up “Know Your Rights” trainings being planned in conjunction with these groups.

Immigrant Rights ACTION – Know Your Rights Training.

Learn what is legal and how ICE is required to operate – and what is actually done. Washtenaw County immigrant rights organizers will help you learn how to be a proper bystander – to help and to document, to avoid causing harm to the detainee and yourself. Teams will be formed to approach area businesses to provide the same materials already provided to area restaurants. It is not necessary to be on a team but chances are good you may encounter ICE in action. Training makes for a safer community for all! Email owofchelsea@gmail.com for more information about upcoming training opportunities.

The Board of One World One Family has also chosen to focus on the need for affordable housing in our area. Housing is a regional issue. It will take all of us, working together, to implement housing affordability solutions.

Western Washtenaw Regional Advisory Group (WWRAG) is a group of representatives from all area governmental entities. This group focuses on HOUSING on a quarterly basis. The April 16 meeting will be a working session for a followup session to the Housing Solutions Town Hall (video of 1/18/25 event here). Come learn how this important matter is being addressed. Also note that the new Chelsea Area Housing Commission will have their first public meeting in April as well. All are encouraged to attend!

WWRAG – Wed, April 16 @ 7pm. Chelsea Council Chambers
Housing Commission – Tues, April 22 @ 7pm. Council Chambers

The US border is not just a geographic location.
The border is everywhere.

It lies within every undocumented immigrant family with the threat that at any moment they can be captured, incarcerated, deported; their lives destroyed. BORDERLAND | The Line Within not only exposes the profitable business of immigration and its human cost, but weaves together the stories of immigrant heroines and heroes resisting and showing a way forward, intent on building a movement in the shadow of the border industrial complex, recognizing the human rights of all.

Come to a screening of this important film!

Check out our December newsletter in your email or click through here: https://mailchi.mp/52178873b8ca/owof-october-2025-newsletter-17717631 Early in 2025, our Board of Directors chose to focus attention on the important issues of Housing Affordability and Immigration. Throughout the year we hosted a number of educational community discussions, collaborated with local groups like the City of Chelsea Human Rights Commission, MIRA, Jackson 4Immigrants, Grassroots Action, and Equality Chelsea, as well as several different groups to train and distribute Know Your Rights information to businesses in our communities. OWOF is a purely volunteer non-profit and we rely on donations to help pay for expenses to bring you a monthly newsletter and countless opportunities to learn and grown. If you are interested in Board membership, getting more involved as a volunteer, attending our programs, or making a donation -Thank You! We need you!! There are no membership dues, but we will be planning an all member meeting in January or February where we will be fleshing out of our program year. The Tamale Dinner Fund-Raiser for Jackson County for Immigrants Coalition was a huge success. $1800 was raised through a combination of dinner sales, a 50/50 raffle, and cash/ check donations. Pilar's Tamale's in Ann Arbor kindly provided 189 tamale dinners. Customers could "dine-in" or "take out". A traditional Mexican playlist accompanied dinner. Kitchen volunteers worked tirelessly to get meals plated. A Jackson group member brought along a Mexican vendor cart with authentic Mexican candy to sample for a suggested donation. OWOF Board Member, Christa Williams MD, thanked and welcomed guests, and introduced Gayla Ignacio and Amador Ybarra, two of the representatives from Jackson County for Immigrants Coalition. They spoke about their group and its efforts to support and protect immigrants in Jackson County during the heightened, warrantless, ICE arrests of community members and the effect this is having on community members, local businesses and families. A question and answer-session followed, allowing for further discussion of how their group is responding to the situation, and how concerned Chelsea residents may be able to assist. The generosity and caring community spirit of Chelsea was evident throughout the evening. Many excellent conversations were had. More than one OWOF member heard "I hope you will be doing this again". And at the end of the evening, when volunteers were pitching in to clean up, we drew the winning 50/50 raffle ticket, which had just one word on it: "donate". OWOF definitely looks forward to doing a similar fundraiser in the future.

After the rally on Saturday, come hear from Voters Not Politicians on Sunday.
