What is behind the strong opinions we hold, why do we think our arguments and beliefs are so different from others and why we find it so hard to get along.  Let’s read and talk about it!

Join us October 15 for PART 3!  This event will be virtual so you can join wherever you are.
7—8.30pm
You don’t need to have attended the first two to participate.  Don’t have time to read:  Watch this video:

The RIghteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt is attracting new attention as we approach an election cycle.  OWOF cannot support candidates but we can support earnest dialogue and promote understanding.

Oct 14 – Honor Indigenous People’s Day!

For centuries, Indian trails crossed the landscape of Washtenaw County. These paths connected Indian villages to fertile hunting and fishing grounds throughout Michigan and supported thriving communities. When settlers arrived in the County during the 19th century, these same trails were used to link the new communities. Eventually, some of these trails became part of the current road system.

Parker Mill Park is located along a prehistoric Native American trail that connected the present-day cities of Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Marker is in Parker Mill County Park, near the parking lot. Marker is near 4650 Geddes Road, Ann Arbor.

WHAT’S YOUR IDEA??
MLKJr. Day has been observed in Chelsea for over 20 years.  OWOF has proudly led most years, but this year we’d like to hear from you!  Do you have an idea for a project or an action that you’d like to see happen?  OWOF and the Human Rights Commission are looking for ideas from the public.  MLK Jr. Day is a day of service to our community or to other folks who do not have the advantages we have in our area.  Dr. King was an advocate for justice – racial, economic and environmental.  What would you suggest?  All ideas welcome.  Please email owofchelsea@gmail.com.  Out of ideas but want to help implement something, let us know that too!

COMMUNITY SOCIAL WORKER
A coalition of key community organizations – City of Chelsea, Chelsea Schools, Five Healthy Towns, Chelsea Hospital among others – recommended that Chelsea hire a community resource person to be available after school hours to serve the community.  This position will be funded by Chelsea’s share of the Community Mental Health and Public Safety Millage.   Interviews have been held and the candidate should be onboard soon.  This will be a great addition to our community.
RENEWAL OF THIS MILLAGE IS ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT!!

CONCERNED ABOUT HOUSING?

The housing supply in Chelsea and the surrounding areas continues to be a serious concern – workers at our major industries can’t afford to live here, young families find homes unavailable, seniors are reluctant to move and downsize, apartments are hard to find. There are a few ways for you to get involved in the discussion:

1) Chelsea Master Plan Public Workshop – Thurs, Nov 14 – 5:00 – 7:30 pm at Chelsea District Library (come anytime) or email comments to MasterPlan@City-Chelsea.org

2) Western Washtenaw Regional Advisory Group – Wed, Nov 13 – 7:00 – 9:00 pm at Chelsea City Council Chambers – WWRAG has a housing focus to meetings on a quarterly basis – Nov 14 is a housing meeting. (2025 proposed housing meeting dates are  3/12, 6/11, 10/8)

3) Housing Town Hall – proposed community meeting for January 2025. More details to follow. Come to the Nov 13 WWRAG meeting to help plan the town hall. More information coming!

To follow up on our excellent Immigration 101 discussion, this is an event to understand what is happening beyond our borders that causes so many people to leave their homes, families and cultures to make the perilous immigrant journey. Jesuit priest, Father Ismael Moreno (known to all as Padre Melo), is one of the foremost voices for human rights in his native Honduras. Close to the people most affected by oppression and poverty, Padre Melo is a soulful and analyst of the reality that the majority of Hondurans live. He is director of Radio Progreso/ERIC, a radio station center for reflection, research and communication at the service of the people throughout Honduras and Central America.

Reminder for the program on the current state of immigration in Washtenaw County and what we can do. Speakers will be from local and state Immigrant Rights groups. Monday, Mar 31 6.00 pm in the McKune Room. In-person only.
